Subject: 256x4 Ram for GUS
TO: gus-general@dsd.es.com
Okay, this has been said before, but I'll do it again...
On DRAM chips for the GUS, the magic numbers to look for are:
XXX4256X-# XX in which:
| | | ||
|| | -->Not important
| |
| -->Access time (Not important as long as it is 10(100ns) or under)
|
--->REALLLY important! Should always be 4256. This is the standard
Identification number of 256x4 ram chips. Some Asian companies
use different numbers, but I couldn't guarentee that they would
work.
Also XXX4257 are also 256x4 chips, but they are slightly different
and will not work with the GUS (I am told).
But almost any 20 pin chip marked with a 4256 should work.
(Note: in the above example, all places marked with an 'X' are unimportant
They mostly are Manufacturer codes and id numbers)
Hope this helps

No, I don't know what daughterboards are available, but I continue to
wonder what this fixation with attaching CD drives to sound cards is?
OK, it saves a slot, but if I get a CD drive, I'd prefer it with
an interface of its own (preferably SCSI, so that the interface card
might be able to drive other devices simultanesouly), so that I'm
not reliant on the GUS to have my CD work.
I don't think that there is any suggestion that soundcard and CD-ROM
can do any more together with the daughterboard than without. The
only real connection is between CD audio out, and GUS CD audio in,
which just requires a simple cable from any CD drive.

Hiya,
I'm running epic pinball, with full sound, in OS/2 2.1, with no problems! Isn't this supposed
to be impossible?

Subject: GUS and Halloween Harry
I just tried out the GUS fix for Halloween Harry (available
where Apogee stuff is). The help in "example.txt" didn't
work for me. With the GUS fix you get a new "SBOSDRV.EXE"
file which you are told to load before running the game.
However, you need to move this file into the SBOS directory
with the other GUS SBOS files. Try renaming Apogee's new
SBOSDRV.EXE to SBOSAPOG.EXE and putting it with the
original SBOSDRV.EXE. Now, create a batch file that uses
the new SBOSAPOG.EXE instead of SBOSDRV.EXE when running
SBOS (confusing, isn't it?). Here is how I run the game:
sbosapog
loadsbos
1hh
sbosapog -f
loadsbos -f
The part the help doesn't mention is that you need to run
LOADSBOS before running the game (the docs just say to run
SBOSDRV). If I didn't run LOADSBOS, the game locks up.
Anyways, I got the sound to work with the game, but it
messes up my joystick (I have the Gravis Gamepad). When I
run the game and reach to option screen, the cursor keeps
moving up. When I play the game, everything is EXTREMELY
jerky. Anyone have a fix?
Mario

uploaded is the press release, which is ILLEGAL to release to the
general public. It doesn't have sound anyway.....

I just heard a Mediavision radio spot on the Bennett show on KITS 105 in San
Francisco. It would work for Gravis as well.
Of cours,e the add was funny "It has to be industry standard, and state of the
art"
seeing as how the current "standard" is FM, I had to laugh... Alex Bennett
would be a good proponent of the GUS if you could get him to plug it. He
writes for a couple computer magazines, and has a very popular morning radio
show. He also hates creative labs :)

Hi HO!
I have a question and a possible hint...
How much does the Ultrasound depend on the DMA channel? I use a 386sx
(25 Mhz) and sometimes have a problem with Playmidi on some .mid files.
Sometimes on an especially "busy" sequence with sustained instruments,
the sustain forgets to 'turn off' and it sounds kindof trashy.
I've tried a 'D=265' switch on my EMS386 line in my config.sys. Things
seem to sound better (D is the DMA buffer, 16 bytes being the default, 256
the max).
Should this help, or is it just my imagination?

Ok...I couldn't find anything in the FAX..and there's been so
much talk about it that I'm thoroughly confused. So could
someone please tell me:
What is the final deal with Star Control ][?
Is there a patch that actually works?

Subject: Ultramid & Dos 5.0 EMM386?
I've been trying to the the Terminator Rampage demo running on my system,
and have been thwarted by this sinister looking message from EMM386 whenever
I try to load ultramid:
EMM386: DMA mode not supported.
Is this a problem with the DOS 5.0 EMM386? I've already tried giving it
d=96 (and d=128) for more DMA area, but this didn't help.
Will a decent memory manager a la QEMM or 386MAX help me out here? My machine
does have the Opti chipset, but hasn't given me problems until I tried
ultramid...
